Anemone and Colts-foot

Anemone Hepatica - The taxonomy of the genus Anemone and its species is not fully resolved. That means you will find Hepatica listed as either a separate genus, or all lumped in with Anemones. My Peterson's Guide has them listed as Hepatica which is just fine by me. Either way, they are beautiful little flowers of very early Spring. Here in NW Ohio we have two species, and they are sometimes found growing together in the same area.

Hepatica nobilis var. acuta
= Hepatica acutiloba, Anemone acutiloba
Sharp-lobed Hepatica

Hepatica nobilis var. obtusa
= Hepatica americana, Anemone americana
Round-lobed Hepatica

I believe the Hepatica pictures here are all of Sharp-lobed Hepatica since the few leaves showing are all pointed. The Colts-foot is an early Spring favorite of mine, and is not related to the Dandelion.

I had so much difficulty uploading the pictures and forcing in the spaces, and since none of the many vertical shots will display correctly, I am going to save the rest for later when they get the bugs worked out of the software. Hopefully that will be soon!

Salamanders And Frogs - Signs of Spring

x

Western Chorus Frog sounds like running your fingers on a plastic comb.

x

Wood Frog sounds like a bunch of crazy little ducks quacking.

x

Blue-Spotted Salamanders of NW Ohio are quietly laying their eggs in the cold March vernal pools.

x

Tiger Salamanders are also in the vernal pools in very early spring.
